The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is calling on Gauteng municipalities and water service providers to rehabilitate failing wastewater treatment plants urgently.

On Monday, the commission released its report on water and sanitation service delivery in the province.

It has made several recommendations, calling on municipalities and other government institutions to improve access to reliable water and sanitation services.

The body found that 1.5 billion litres of water are lost every day in Gauteng due to leaks.

“The commission found that DWS [Department of Water and Sanitation] is providing substantial support to Gauteng’s water sector. But protection and rehabilitation of the underlying water resource require continued attention.

“The commission is concerned about the condition of water resources on which Gauteng’s water security depends,” said commissioner Henk Boshoff.
