The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms in parts of the country, including Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
It warns that the storms could bring heavy downpours, hailstones and damaging winds, with the risk of localised flooding.
Motorists and pedestrians are being urged to exercise caution, as the severe weather could disrupt travel and pose a risk to public safety.
SA Weather Service spokesperson Lehlohonolo Thobela said the severe weather conditions are expected to develop from early evening.
“We’re still expecting isolated to scattered thunderstorms possible over the central and eastern parts of the country. This would include the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, as well as into Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the eastern parts of the North West. Into the central interior and the western parts of the country, expect a yellow level two warning of severe thunderstorms, but across most parts of the Northern Cape we are expecting some damaging,” said Thobela.
