I must say, I am a little surprised with the outcome of these local elections this week. I never would have thought that people would stop voting for the ANC. The 2021 local elections saw the ANC get 62%. Today, as the counting carries on, they are now on 43%. What I found fascinating was when speaking to others in the area, I noticed that people were starting to lean more towards voting for The Independents, the DA and others rather than saying the ANC. It was the same staunch ANC voters now changing their minds.
The ANC still has many people who are very loyal towards them because of what they did for South Africa. But the ANC of Nelson Mandela is not the same ANC of today. The ANC has let the residents down badly when it comes to service delivery. This is the reason for the change in votes. People are tired of struggling for basic water, electricity and watching sewerage running through their backyards.
What happens in the next few days will be very interesting. Who will team up with whom? The next moves of the smaller parties will be a defining moment as we will see where their loyalty actually lies. A party that teams up with the ANC must have clear goals in place, or we will judge them just as harshly as we have done towards the ANC.
Parties like The Independents, DA, EFF, MK and other smaller parties now need to think of the best interests of the people of Enoch Mgijima and team up together to teach a lesson to the ANC. Hold them accountable by showing them they will now lose power because of the way they managed our towns. We remember the way we sat without water, the way we had no electricity for days on end. We have watched how our town has deteriorated in front of our eyes. This is how we fix this problem.
And the future coalition might be made up of the other smaller parties, but we will hold them just as accountable if they fail the people again.
I am proud of our democracy, our votes have spoken.
