A night of election celebrations turned deadly after a 57-year-old man was shot dead outside a voting station in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga.
The man was among a group of people celebrating while waiting for the election results to be announced.
The shooting happened at Boikhutso at about 12.15am on Thursday, November 5.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, two unknown men suddenly emerged and opened fire on the group.
“It is alleged that two unknown male suspects emerged and started firing shots at the group before fleeing the scene,” Mdhluli said.
It was only after the shooting that people realised someone had been hit.
A family member rushed the victim to hospital. However, he was declared dead on arrival.
The 57-year-old had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.
Police have opened a murder investigation. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
No arrests have been made.
Mdhluli said police were appealing to anyone with information that could help investigators identify the gunmen.
“The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise, has ordered that all resources be mobilised to ensure that those responsible are brought to book,” he said.
