Limpopo police hunt assault suspect who fled custody while handcuffed

Limpopo police have launched a manhunt for a 45-year-old man who allegedly escaped from police custody while handcuffed, shortly after being arrested in connection with an assault case.

Matome Lodwick Ratjomane allegedly fled from the Maleboho Police Station on Sunday, at approximately 9.10pm.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Ratjomane had been arrested in connection with an assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) case allegedly committed in September.

He reportedly escaped shortly after being processed at the police station’s Community Service Centre.

Ledwaba said Ratjomane fled towards the nearby court premises despite being handcuffed.

“Police immediately conducted searches around the station and surrounding areas, but the suspect could not be located. He is now also facing an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.”

Police warn public not to approach escaped suspect

Police have appealed to members of the public to assist in tracing Ratjomane, whose whereabouts remain unknown, but Ledwaba warned residents against attempting to apprehend the suspect him  themselves.

“Members of the public are cautioned not to approach or attempt to apprehend the suspect but to immediately alert the police,” he said.

Anyone with information about Ratjomane’s whereabouts is urged to contact investigating officer Sergeant Matome Moitsi on 082 414 3035 or 072 278 0050.
