Fresh South African cherries are back on supermarket shelves, with a shorter season expected following challenging spring weather in the Western Cape.
Cherry season has arrived earlier than usual, giving fruit lovers a chance to enjoy the first fresh harvest of summer, but challenging weather conditions mean supplies are expected to be limited towards the end of the year.
Cherry Timeâ„¢ says hot, dry and windy conditions during spring affected flowering, pollination and fruit development across Western Cape orchards, with mid- and late-season varieties particularly affected.
While early varieties have produced a reasonable crop, the brand expects limited stock by December.
Each cherry is picked by hand and harvested once it has developed its full flavour on the tree, before being cooled promptly to preserve freshness.
The fruit is available at Checkers and Pick n Pay stores nationwide from Monday, October 26, while stocks last. Customers can also order online through Cherry Time’s website, with delivery available to selected areas in the Western Cape and collection from a designated pick-up point in Johannesburg.
