The African National Congress (ANC) has lost its outright majority in the embattled Makana Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape, setting the stage for coalition negotiations after failing to secure enough seats to govern alone.
The party, which held onto power after winning 14 of 27 seats in the 2021 local government elections, received just over 31% of the vote, translating into 10 of the municipality’s 25 council seats.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) follows with 6 seats after securing 27.24% of the vote, while newcomer Makana United Civic Movement (MUCM) has 4 seats with 19.51%.
The Makana Municipality is heading for a potentially contested coalition government, with no political party securing the 13 seats needed for an outright majority in the 25-seat council.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Patriotic Alliance (PA), South African Communist Party (SACP), Makana and ActionSA each secured 1 seat.
The results mark a significant shift in political control of a municipality plagued by institutional instability, financial mismanagement, and persistent service delivery failures.
