The trial of two men accused of murdering Bushbuckridge chief traffic officer Judas Lens Chiloane is under way at the Mbombela high court, where both have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Charles Mbongiseni Mabuza, 36, and Saico Junior Ngoma, 46, are accused of killing Chiloane during an alleged robbery in White River, Mpumalanga, on March 11 2023.

The state alleges the accused approached a vehicle occupied by Chiloane and another person, who survived the incident, National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said on Wednesday.

The vehicle was parked on the roadside along Kranskop Road.

The accused allegedly instructed the occupants to drive to a bushy area, where they demanded money. After discovering that Chiloane was a traffic official, they allegedly demanded his service firearm.

The state alleges the men shot Chiloane before fleeing with a cellphone, money, a laptop and his firearm. He was declared dead at the scene.

Mabuza and Ngoma face charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to commit a crime, possession of a prohibited firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Nyuswa said both accused remain in custody, with the state currently presenting its evidence-in-chief.

The trial is scheduled to continue until November 13.
