Five suspects are expected to appear before the Krugersdorp magistrate’s court after their arrest last week when police uncovered a multi-million rand clandestine drug manufacturing laboratory at a farm in Hekpoort, near Krugersdorp, Gauteng.
The five South African nationals found at the premises will face charges of manufacturing and dealing in illegal drugs.
The clandestine laboratory worth an estimated R100m was uncovered through a multi-disciplinary operation led by the narcotics bureau of the Hawks working in collaboration with South African Police Service head office crime intelligence, the special task force and the West Rand K-9 unit.
Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale said police discovered quantities of mandrax and ecstasy tablets at the suspected drug manufacturing laboratory.
The bust follows several raids on drug laboratories across the country this year, including a laboratory discovered in Musina valued at more than R600m.
