Residents living near flooded Limpopo river construct another dangerous makeshift bridge

The initial bridge, which was essential for accessing medical services, was destroyed by heavy rains, forcing residents to build a new, but more unstable bridge.

The first makeshift bridge was a disaster waiting to happen, as it wobbled and swayed side to side with every step.

Thin sticks served as handrails, corrugated iron sheets formed the walking surface, while wooden logs held the structure together.

But the new bridge is even worse.

It consists of just two thick wooden logs that residents have to walk on, with nothing to hold on to for support.

Brian Komane, an ActionSA member in the area, is among those who constructed the new makeshift bridge.

“This bridge is a temporary measure. Hopefully, in December, we’ll have a better makeshift bridge. We have already started collecting the material.”

He said he doubts anyone will lose their life while using the wobbly bridge.

Komane further defended the construction of the unstable makeshift bridge.

“The government has failed the people. So, there is nothing wrong with us taking matters into our own hands.”
