Police have launched a manhunt for two awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from custody at Waterval Police Station in Limpopo’s Vhembe District in the early hours of Thursday.
The escape was discovered on Thursday morning when a police officer conducting routine patrols near the cells heard calls for assistance and went to investigate.
According to the police, officers discovered that the two had escaped after cutting through the burglar bars and iron grills above the cell balcony.
The escapees have been identified as Tafara Zangarai, 30, and Ndalamo Nemakhavhani, 35. Both were being held in connection with separate cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances reported at Waterval.
Police mobilise resources to recapture escapees
Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Jan Petrus Scheepers has ordered an intensive operation to track down and re-arrest the two men.
He has also directed that the circumstances surrounding the escape be thoroughly investigated.
“We have mobilised all resources to ensure these suspects are brought back into custody. I am calling on communities to work with us and provide any information that may lead to their re-arrest,” Scheepers said.
Communities warned against confronting suspects
Police have warned members of the public against attempting to apprehend the escapees themselves, describing them as dangerous.
Anyone with information that could assist investigators in locating the two men should contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Siema Luvhani, on 079 139 9903.
Information can also be reported at the nearest police station.
Police investigations are continuing.
