Isolated thunderstorms expected across parts of SA this week

A surface trough over the western interior, a high-pressure system over the eastern parts of the country and upper-air disturbances are expected to combine with high temperatures to produce isolated to scattered thunderstorms over the central and eastern parts of the country this week.

According to the South African Weather Service (Saws), on Monday cloudy and cool conditions are expected along the east and south coasts. Otherwise, partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions are expected, with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms possible over the central and eastern parts of the country.

Saws senior forecaster Lehlogonolo Thobela said on Tuesday cloudy and cool conditions are expected along the east coast and the adjacent interior, with widespread rain/showers possible along the coastal areas of the Eastern Cape and the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

“Otherwise, partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions are expected, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms possible over the eastern parts of the country,” said Thobela.

The weather service issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and lightning in KwaZulu-Natal for Monday. It warned this might result in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, except in the extreme northeast, and the extreme northern parts of Eastern Cape.

A yellow level 1 warning was issued for damaging winds that could cause localised damage to settlements, agricultural losses and disruptions to transport routes and travel services in the western parts of the Free State and extreme eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

High fire danger conditions are expected over the North West, central and eastern Northern Cape, most parts of the Free State and Limpopo, and in places in western KwaZulu-Natal and western parts of the Northern Cape.

Partly cloudy and warm-to-hot conditions were expected in Gauteng, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the south.
