Gauteng Health outlines measures to manage medicine supply challenges

Gauteng’s Health Department says the unavailability of some medication at public facilities should not result in patients going without treatment.

The department said it can provide alternative pack sizes, different approved manufacturers or clinically appropriate alternative medicines, depending on what is available.

It’s part of a range of interventions being used to manage medicine supply challenges at public health facilities across the province.

Gauteng Health said it is constantly monitoring medicine stock levels to identify potential shortages and respond before they become more severe.

Where necessary, the department said clinically appropriate alternatives can also be provided in line with standard treatment guidelines.

Gauteng Health is also moving available stock between facilities and districts to balance supplies and limit wastage.

And where urgent medicines are needed, the department can source them from another approved supplier.

“We remain committed to ensuring continuity of care for patients who depend on chronic and other essential medicines. The Department will continue working with the National Department of Health, suppliers, districts and health facilities to address current supply challenges and strengthen medicine availability across the province.”
