Gauteng government pays tribute to suspended late traffic police chief Samuel Mashaba

The Gauteng government has paid tribute to suspended provincial traffic police chief Samuel Mashaba after his death.

Mashaba died on Tuesday at Netcare Milpark Hospital while receiving medical care.

He was placed on suspension after his appearance at the Madlanga commission of inquiry in June.

His testimony centred on his role in a major July 2021 drug bust in Aeroton, south of Johannesburg, where law enforcement officers seized more than 715kg of cocaine valued at about R300m. During the inquiry, admissions were made about action that may have constituted serious acts of misconduct, leading to his suspension.

The provincial government acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding his suspension and appearance before the commission were part of an ongoing public process.

Premier Panyaza Lesufi conveyed his condolences to Mashaba’s family and colleagues.

“On behalf of the Gauteng government, I convey our deepest condolences to the Mashaba family following the passing of chief inspector Samuel Mashaba,” Lesufi said.

“We also extend our condolences to his colleagues in the Gauteng traffic police and the broader law enforcement fraternity, who are mourning the loss of a dedicated colleague. May the family find strength, comfort, and courage in the support of those around them during this period of grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
