Gauteng authorities are deploying extra police officers, traffic teams, drones and mobile command centres to strengthen security and manage crowds ahead of the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

Gauteng authorities say they will deploy extra police officers, traffic teams and drone technology for this weekend’s Soweto Derby as thousands of fans head to FNB Stadium.
The highly anticipated clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is expected to draw large crowds, prompting a coordinated security operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), metro police departments and other law enforcement agencies.
Officials say there will be a stronger police presence around the stadium, with additional patrols, traffic management measures and crime prevention operations in and around the venue.
The province will also use elements of its e-Policing Strategy, which combines technology with traditional policing methods. According to the Gauteng government, the approach aims to improve coordination among law enforcement agencies and help officers respond more quickly to incidents.
Drone technology will be used to monitor crowd movement, traffic conditions and potential safety risks around the stadium precinct. Images and information gathered from the air will be relayed to operational teams on the ground.

Mobile command centres will also be deployed to support communication between officers and coordinate responses to incidents as they arise.
The provincial government has encouraged supporters to comply with traffic regulations, remain alert and report any suspicious activity. It has also urged residents to use the province’s e-panic button to report safety emergencies.
The operation forms part of wider efforts to improve security at major public events while maintaining policing services in surrounding communities.
