The Western Cape Department of Mobility said it won’t hesitate to take the required legal steps if any unlawful activity occurs between the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA).
The comments come after the two taxi associations signed a landmark peace agreement on Friday.

The agreement follows several deadly attacks involving the two taxi associations in recent weeks.
A South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) spokesperson in the Western Cape previously told Eyewitness News that the attacks between the two taxi associations were triggered by an unresolved dispute over the lucrative Somerset West route.
This is the same route that was closed by the provincial government last year in response to ongoing violence in the industry.
The department said it welcomes the agreement. However, they said the real test is what happens from here.
Spokesperson Muneera Allie said that the department expects all parties to honour their commitments.
“Should any unlawful activity occur, the department will not hesitate to implement the necessary legal and enforcement measures to restore stability.”
She said the department will continue to monitor the situation closely, and they will not hesitate to intervene again if needed.
