The Gauteng Department of Health has expressed concern over research revealing a declining number of women are taking contraceptives in the country.
The new data estimates that 75% of pregnancies in South Africa are linked to low contraceptive use.
The department is, therefore, encouraging women to use the drugs, citing the benefits of family planning outweigh the potential side effects
Spokesperson Steve Mabona said, “We are encouraging women and girls of reproductive age to make use of the wide range of safe, effective and free contraceptives methods available at clinics. However, health care professionals are available to provide counselling and assist woman to choose the most suitable contraceptive method.”
