Residents in the Western and Eastern Cape are being urged to prepare for a potentially disruptive start to the week, with heavy rain, gale-force winds and rough seas expected along parts of the coast.
The South African Weather Service said that a cut-off low is expected to make landfall on Sunday, bringing widespread rain to the two provinces.
Gale force winds are forecast along the south-western coast, with waves of more than four metres expected, creating dangerous conditions for beachgoers, small vessels, and coastal communities.
The rain will also bring some relief to the Western Cape’s water situation, where dam levels continue to decline and concerns are growing about water security ahead of summer.
Most of the country can otherwise expect dry and warm conditions this weekend.
Senior forecaster Tokelo Chiloane said the system will move inland from Monday, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures and rain to other parts of the country.
“I know people are going to be worried about Gauteng province. Gauteng will only be affected from Tuesday onwards, mainly with rainfall and lower temperatures. At the moment, there’s nothing significant expected for Gauteng, as well as Mpumalanga,” said Chiloane.
