Good Party secretary Brett Herron said that at the current rate, it will take over 220 years to clear the backlog.
Data tabled by MEC for infrastructure Tertuis Simmers in the provincial parliament shows 754,260 households are registered on the Western Cape housing demand database.
The City of Cape Town accounts for 490,901 of those applications.
Herron said that just 3,046 new subsidised homes were delivered during the 2024/2025 financial year.
“Even so, the numbers on the Western Cape housing demand database only partially describe the extent of the provincial housing crisis and the lack of plans and urgency to meet the gaping need,” he said.
Simmers cited a range of factors affecting the process, including registration delays, beneficiary disputes and deceased estates, saying measures are underway to reduce the backlog.
