Western Cape government officials said that scientific projections indicate climate change is expected to increase the risk of devastating wildfires in the province.
Local government Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell said that the province’s traditional four-month fire season has now expanded to eight months, from October to May.
Department spokesperson Dave Bryant said that the clearing of alien vegetation in high-risk areas is being prioritised.
Bryant added that preparation is critical.
“Private land owners must also take responsibility by clearing invasive alien vegetation, cutting back fuel loads and maintaining boundary fire breaks on their properties.”
