WC dam levels drop compared to last year, but no water restrictions yet

The department added that heavy rains in May helped replenish water supplies, cushioning the impact of below-average rainfall recorded during winter.

Some areas in the Gouritz and Olifants-Doorn catchments are at full capacity, while the Clanwilliam Dam is almost 96% full.

The Akkerkloof Dam in Knysna has also continued to rise, reaching 60% from 58% last week.

Provincial Department of Water and Sanitation head Ntombizanele Mbila-Mupariwa said they expected more rainfall in the coming weeks and were confident provincial dam levels could reach 80%.

“However, if we don’t get to the 80%, we are going to look at the model that is going to be run in November, where we are going to come up with a solution to whether we are going to implement water restrictions or not,” Mbila-Mupariwa said.

For now, the department said there is no need to introduce water restrictions.
