Today’s weather: Western Cape, Northern Cape brace for isolated showers as cold conditions persist

Most of South Africa is set for another cold winter’s day on Tuesday, with largely fine and dry conditions expected across the country. However, parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape could see isolated showers and thundershowers, with a 30% chance of rain forecast over north-western areas.

The South African Weather Service says no severe weather warnings have been issued for Tuesday, although extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in the Karoo Hoogland Local Municipality in the Northern Cape and the Laingsburg Local Municipality in the Western Cape.

In the Western Cape, partly cloudy conditions are expected, with patches of morning fog along the west and south-west coast. Cloud cover will increase during the afternoon, bringing a 30% chance of isolated showers and thundershowers to north-western parts of the province.

Temperatures will remain cool, while north-westerly winds are expected to strengthen along the west coast later in the day.

The Northern Cape will also see a 30% chance of isolated showers and thundershowers in western areas. Elsewhere, the province will remain fine and cool to warm, with morning fog expected along the coast.

Across Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West and the Free State, dry conditions will prevail. Frost is expected in parts of Gauteng, the Free State, North West and the Mpumalanga Highveld and escarpment during the early morning hours before temperatures recover during the day.

The Eastern Cape is expected to remain rain-free, with fine weather forecast across both the western and eastern regions. Conditions will range from cool to warm, although some northern areas of the province will start the day colder.

KwaZulu-Natal can expect fine and cool weather, becoming warm in the north-east. The province will remain dry, with fresh north-easterly winds developing along the coast during the afternoon. A very high UVB sunburn index is expected.
