The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow level 1 warning for the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.
The weather service has predicted partly cloudy weather in the west of the country. Otherwise, cloudy, windy, and cold to very cold with isolated showers and rain over the central and eastern parts but scattered along the east coast and adjacent interior.
The weather service said snowfall is still expected in mountainous areas.
Eastern Cape
The weather service said the warning is specifically for the Eastern Cape coast. It said a tight pressure gradient between a cold front passing along the south coast and a ridging high-pressure system is resulting in strong east to north-easterly winds of at least 60km/h.
“These winds are expected to enhance the sea state to about four metres to five metres between Plettenberg Bay and Port Alfred. The direction of the waves will be easterly to south-easterly,” the weather service said.
The impact of the strong winds could lead to disruptions to small harbours and/or ports, and beachfront activities. Those on the water might find difficulty in navigation for vessels at sea. Small vessels are at risk of taking on water and capsizing within a locality. Some vessels are at risk of dragging anchor.
