International value retailer MR.DIY is continuing its rapid expansion into South Africa, with its first store in Mpumalanga opening later this month.
The Malaysian retailer will open at Highveld Mall on 19 August 2026, marking its entry into another South African province as it works towards a much larger national footprint.
The expansion comes just months after MR.DIY continued building its presence in the country, with the retailer now targeting 14 South African stores by the end of 2026.
“Opening in Mpumalanga is an exciting milestone in MR.DIY’s expansion across South Africa,” said Khumo Mabe, procurement specialist at MR.DIY.
The company said the new store will give shoppers access to its range of affordable home, hardware and lifestyle products.
MR.DIY is growing quickly in South Africa
MR.DIY only entered the South African market in 2024, opening its first store at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre.
The retailer subsequently expanded to Irene Village Mall, Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre, Norwood Mall and Mall@Carnival.
The Mall@Carnival store, which opened in March, was the company’s fifth South African outlet at the time.
In May and June, MR.DIY then opened its sixth and seventh stores at Northgate Shopping Centre and Wonderpark Shopping Centre, respectively.
The stores are typically large-format outlets of more than 1 000 square metres, carrying between 17 000 and 18 000 products.
Its range includes everything from hardware and household essentials to stationery, toys, décor and small electronics, with the retailer positioning itself as an affordable one-stop shop.
MR.DIY’s expansion is now moving beyond its initial footprint in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
Another store is opening in KwaZulu-Natal
Mpumalanga isn’t the only new province receiving an MR.DIY store.
As reported by BusinessTech, the retailer is also opening at Saxony Westwood in KwaZulu-Natal on 14 August, just days before the Highveld Mall launch.
A grand opening event for the new stores is scheduled for 29 and 30 August.
The retailer previously indicated that it wants to establish a broader national presence, with further expansion planned in major urban areas and beyond.
MR.DIY’s South African rollout is part of a much bigger international operation.
The company began as a single hardware store in Malaysia in 2005 and has since grown into a global retailer with nearly 5 000 stores across Asia and Europe.
South Africa marks its first move into Africa, making the country an important new market for the retailer.
With 14 stores targeted by the end of 2026, MR.DIY’s footprint is set to grow considerably from the handful of outlets it had when it first entered the market.
