Mayoral candidates for the MK Party have vowed to deal with corruption and crime in Gauteng’s metros if elected.
The party unveiled six of its metro mayoral candidates for the upcoming local government elections.
The party said it will contest every municipality in the country and is still finalising the process of choosing candidates.
Its Johannesburg mayoral candidate, Bongani Baloyi, said the city needs capable leadership if it’s to remain the continent’s economic powerhouse.
“The residents of Johannesburg deserve a leader with credibility, ethical standing and who will respect the mandate bestowed upon them. So, over the next few days and weeks, we will be hitting the ground running, demonstrating that we can turn around a very complex and unique city. This is the biggest city in South Africa, in Africa, and whatever happens in Johannesburg affects us all.”
The party’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Thulani Shongwe, said corruption and crime are inhibiting Gauteng’s potential.
“I need that police van because I want to arrest people in Ekurhuleni because the money that’s supposed to build houses in Ekurhuleni – people at the Chris Hani informal settlement live in shacks. Two billion rand was stolen for toilets and there’s a certain political party that was involved. So I need that van to put corrupt politicians and tenderpreneurs [behind bars].”
