Gauteng schools to remain open despite bitter cold

JOHANNESBURG – Schooling across Gauteng will continue as normal despite the bitterly cold weather.

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile says learners and educators who are able to get to school should do so.

“We caution everyone to keep warm and safe and not to light fires inside closed buildings, so that we don’t have any unfortunate incidents,” Maile said.

He said the department had not received reports of any adverse incidents at schools so far, and that schools across the province were continuing to operate.

Maile also dismissed a fake letter circulating in one of the province’s districts claiming that schools had been closed.

“We have since alerted schools in that district to ignore that letter. Schools are continuing as normal in Gauteng, except where it is not possible,” he said.
