The death of two-time world boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete has sparked an outpouring of grief, with Eastern Cape leaders describing his death as a devastating loss to his family, the sporting fraternity and the communities he represented.
Premier Oscar Mabuyane and Buffalo City Metro mayor Princess Faku were among those who expressed condolences after the 38-year-old boxer was gunned down outside his Mdantsane home on Friday night.
According to preliminary reports, Tete had arrived at his home at about 6.30pm and was waiting for the gate to open when two unknown armed suspects, wearing balaclavas, emerged from a vehicle and opened fire on him and his 27-year-old female passenger.
In an attempt to escape the hail of bullets, he drove his vehicle into the yard. He succumbed to his injuries, while his female passenger sustained multiple gunshot wounds. She has been admitted to hospital.
Tete’s manager Mlandeli Tengimfene confirmed that the boxer had died.
“I am devastated by the shocking and senseless killing of our champion, Zolani Tete,” said Mabuyane in a statement issued on Friday night.
