On 10 August, Eddie and Tamara Murray, a couple living in the Eastern Cape, happily braved the cold weather to treat their 6-year-old daughter to a memorable snowfall experience.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had previously issued a level 6 warning that snowfall disruptions were expected in multiple municipalities within the Eastern Cape, affecting several routes and mountain passes.
Fast forward to Tuesday, 11 August, most of those passes have since reopened as conditions have eased.
THE MURRAY FAMILY EMBRACES SNOWFALL EXPERIENCE IN THE EASTERN CAPE
Sidima Mfeku from SABC News reported live from Penhoek Pass, where families parked their cars by the roadside to enjoy the snowfall.
Among them was the Murray family, who took the opportunity to have some fun in the snow while celebrating their daughter’s sixth birthday.
Eddie, the father of the young girl, shared his thoughts on experiencing snow.
“Every year we are lucky to have snow. We bring the kids all the time to come and play. That’s something that you experience maybe once in your lifetime, but we’re lucky to stay around here,” he said.
His wife, Tamara Murray, also expressed her thoughts about the snow.
“We also come from the Eastern Cape (Craddock), and we’ve never seen snow before. So being around the area that snows is genuinely something that is amazing,” she said.
Tamara said the following about her daughter experiencing the snow: “So this will be so memorable for her taking it when she goes and gets bigger.”
SAFETY REMAINED A PRIORITY FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT
According to the SABC, safety was a priority for the provincial Department of Transport, with law enforcement implementing measures to protect the public.
The cold weather conditions in the province also forced motorists to change routes when approaching the Kimber Bridge.
