Tragic weekend in Mpumalanga: Eight lives lost in two separate road crashes

Mpumalanga police are investigating the cause of a fatal crash on the R577 between Roossenekal and Mashishing that claimed four lives on Saturday.

Police said the driver of a Volkswagen allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.

The driver and three passengers died at the scene. One person sustained injuries.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims.

“We cannot allow road deaths to become so frequent when most of these incidents are avoidable. We just need responsible driver behaviour to end this chaos and make our roads safer. We all need to obey the rules,” he said.

Meanwhile, the death toll from an earlier taxi rollover on the R40 between Mbombela and Barberton has increased to four.

Macie also urged public transport operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and not overloaded.
