Today’s weather: Cold winter and coastal rain expected in South Africa

South Africans can expect another chilly winter’s day on Thursday.

2026, with most of the country remaining dry and cool, while light rain and showers are forecast for parts of the southern and eastern coastline.

According to the South African Weather Service, no severe weather warnings, fire danger alerts or advisories have been issued for the day.

Inland provinces, including Gauteng, Limpopo, North West, the Free State and much of Mpumalanga, will experience fine conditions with cold to cool temperatures and widespread morning frost in some areas.

Rainfall is expected to remain largely confined to coastal regions. The highest chance of rain is along parts of the southern coast, stretching from the Garden Route into the Eastern Cape, where scattered showers with a 60% probability are forecast.

Light rain is also expected along sections of the Western Cape south coast during the early morning, with a 30% chance of rainfall around Cape Town and surrounding coastal areas.

Along the Eastern Cape coastline, including areas around Gqeberha and East London, residents can expect isolated showers with a 30% chance of rain.

KwaZulu-Natal will start the day fine and cold, becoming partly cloudy later with evening showers and rain expected along the coast and adjacent areas, where rainfall probabilities are also around 30%.

The remainder of the country is forecast to stay dry, with no significant rainfall expected across the central interior, Northern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and most of Mpumalanga.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution in areas affected by morning fog, particularly along parts of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, while strong south-easterly winds are expected in places along the south-western coastline. Temperatures will remain below average in many regions, reinforcing the grip of winter across much of South Africa.
