Snow has returned to parts of South Africa, as a bitter cold continues to grip ahead of the weekend.
It has been snowing in the Eastern Cape, parts of KwaZulu-Natal and in some areas of the Free State along the Lesotho border.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has urged motorists to drive carefully on icy conditions.
Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said, “Around the coastal parts of KZN, we are expecting damaging winds and rains that may result in difficulty navigating at sea. It is a yellow level 2 warning, which means there is a high likelihood of minor impact expected. If you’re in Gauteng, expect cool temperatures into the afternoon. Partly cloudy conditions are expected.”
With severe weather warnings becoming more common, the Weather Service is also encouraging South Africans to better understand its impact-based warning system.
Thobela explained that the colour-coded alerts are designed to show the type of weather expected.
“So, for example, a yellow level would be a high likelihood with minor impact, or orange with a high likelihood and significant impact. So, with every number that we have in terms of the colour as well as the warning that we issue, it results in a likelihood as well as the impact that are expected.”
