Nine undocumented foreigners arrested during a raid on the biscuit factory in the Free State

A factory owner in the Free State could face legal action after nine foreigners were arrested during a raid on a biscuit factory in Reitz.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako said the operation was launched after police received information about foreigners allegedly working at the facility.

“The Thabo Mofutsanyana District Operational Command Center acted quickly on information received about a group of foreigners allegedly working at a farm factory producing biscuits in Reitz,” Mmako said.

Police said an intelligence-led raid was then carried out on the premises, leading to the arrest of the nine suspects.

“An intelligence-led operation was carried out at the premises, resulting in the arrest of nine undocumented foreign nationals. The suspects have been detained while the necessary immigration verification and administrative processes are completed,” Mmako said.

The arrests come amid heightened scrutiny of the employment of undocumented migrants in several sectors of the economy, including agriculture and industry.

Authorities have also spoken to the local municipality over the issue, with the factory expected to cease operations while investigations continue.

“The local municipality is involved in the matter and the factory is expected to be closed pending further investigations,” Mmako said.

Police indicated the investigation could extend beyond the individuals arrested, with potential legal ramifications for the facility’s owner.

“The authorities are also considering further action against the owner for alleged non-compliance with applicable laws.”

SAPS reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing immigration laws and tackling unlawful activities.

“The South African Police Service remains committed to enforcing the law, ensuring compliance with immigration laws and working closely with relevant stakeholders to tackle all forms of unlawful activity,” Mmako said.

The arrested individuals remain in custody while immigration verification processes are completed.
