The appointment of Major General Luyanda Damoyi as the acting Provincial Police Commissioner for the Western Cape has been welcomed by Premier Alan Winde and Anroux Marais, the Provincial Minister of Police and Community Oversight.
Premier Winde highlighted that Major General Damoyi possesses extensive knowledge and expertise, particularly from his previous tenure as Deputy Provincial Commissioner under Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile.
The Premier emphasised the urgent need for Major General Damoyi to focus on securing improved resources for the region, pointing out that the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape is currently grappling with major resource limitations.
Furthermore, Premier Winde advocated for faster progress in talks regarding the decentralization of critical policing operations. This includes enhancing the intelligence capacities of metro police services and broadening their investigative authority.
In his congratulatory remarks to Major General Damoyi, Minister Marais shared: “I am confident that his leadership, integrity and experience will guide SAPS in the Western Cape with excellence. I wish him every success in strengthening public safety and fostering trust between the SAPS and the communities it serves by upholding the highest standards of justice and accountability.”
Both leaders have appealed to the acting commissioner to review and adopt the proposals from the Western Cape government’s report on policing needs and priorities, noting that these measures will support the SAPS and associated law enforcement bodies in improving their operations.
