MTPA searches for stray lions in Komatipoort area | Mpumalanga News

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) has launched a search operation for one or more lions that were reportedly spotted along Ngwenya and Crocodile Roads in the Komatipoort area earlier this week.

According to the MTPA spokesperson Simphiwe Shungube, agency rangers have been searching the area since the animals were first seen on July 28.

“Our rangers are on the ground searching for the lion or lions that were spotted on the side of the road. Since the initial sighting, they have not been seen again,” said Shungube.

“We believe they may have escaped from the Kruger National Park, and we are pleading with members of the public not to attempt to catch or approach the animals. Instead, they should immediately contact the relevant authorities, and our teams will respond.”

“We have had success before in capturing wandering lions and taking them back to their natural habitat,” he said.

Kruger National Park provides support

“We have been made aware of the reported lion or lions outside the park. The MTPA is leading the operation at this stage,” said Kruger National Park general manager for communications and marketing Rey Thakhuli. “So far, there are no new confirmed reports. Response teams will act should another sighting be reported, and Kruger National Park rangers will provide support when requested.”

Authorities have urged residents and motorists in the Nkomazi area to remain vigilant and avoid approaching the animals if spotted, and to report any sightings immediately to the MTPA or local authorities.
