A motorcyclist has died, while three other people were injured in a collision involving a motorcycle and a Toyota Corolla on the R101 near Bela-Bela Lodge in Limpopo.
The crash occurred on Tuesday night and forced the temporary closure of the road.
Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said preliminary reports indicate that three people were injured in the crash, including the driver of the Toyota Corolla, who sustained serious injuries.
“The motorcyclist was declared deceased at the scene,” she said.
Mabata said preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed may have contributed to the crash.
“Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.”
“The department extends its sincere appreciation to the Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and traffic law enforcement officers for their swift response and professional management of the incident.
She confirmed on Wednesday morning that the road is now fully open and traffic is flowing freely.
“Motorists are nevertheless urged to continue exercising caution while travelling through the area.
“”The department conveys its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased and wishes those who sustained injuries a speedy and full recovery.”
Mabata urged motorists to obey speed limits and all other traffic laws.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Let us save lives and arrive alive,” she said.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, four people died and eight others were injured in a multi-vehicle collision involving nine vehicles, including an articulated truck, on the R555 near Middelburg in Mpumalanga on Monday afternoon.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison confirmed the crash.
Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the victims were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
He said it is alleged that an articulated truck travelling from Middelburg towards Emalahleni on the R555 apparently lost control before colliding with one of the vehicles.
“Several other vehicles then collided with each other and further crashed into steel that had fallen from the truck.”
Mmusi said five people sustained serious injuries, while three others suffered minor injuries.
“The injured are receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals in Middelburg and Emalahleni.”
He confirmed that the crash involved nine vehicles, including an articulated truck, four light delivery vehicles, one SUV and other motor vehicles.
“The investigation into the cause of the crash is underway,” he said.
