Limpopo repatriation bus crash: ‘The driver was sleeping’

It is understood that the driver was fatigued and he veered off the road, resulting in the bus falling from a small bridge.

The belongings of passengers were strewn across the scene with power banks, food, clothing and other personal items.

Among the debris are what appear to be an infant’s shoes, a pacifier and a baby bottle – which are painful reminders that young children were also on board.

A man who identified himself as the assistant driver claims the man behind the wheel fell asleep and lost control of the bus.

“The driver was sleeping, and a police officer woke him up. He told the driver to go to Musina to register and take the fingerprints of the passengers. When the driver started the bus, he was already exhausted and failed to control the bus.”

He said passengers were frightened: “I shouted and even the passengers heard me. Some of them started praying before the bus fell into this ditch.”

He said the bus was on its second trip from South Africa to Malawi.
