Gauteng Health notes strong uptake of HIV prevention injection lenacapavir

This is 131% of the province’s initial monthly target of just under 4,700 initiations.

Lenacapavir is aimed at HIV-negative people who are at substantial risk of contracting the virus and forms part of South Africa’s efforts to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Gauteng Department of Health’s spokesperson, Steve Mabona, explained.

“The department has noted a strong uptake of lenacapavir in all five districts. Tshwane recorded the highest number of initiations, sitting at 2,216, followed by Johannesburg at 1981, Ekurhuleni 1435, Sedibeng 377, West Rand 121 initiations.

“The department continues to maintain adequate stock levels to support this programme.”
