Two men, including a Gauteng police officer, have been killed during a violent altercation at a mine in Limpopo.
Police said the shooting happened after a dispute in Mahlokwane Village on Tuesday, where the victims allegedly claimed to have a court order to stop mining operations and said they held shares in the mine.
Officers said the men first visited the mine last Friday to meet the owner, but left after he failed to arrive.
They returned on Tuesday and while waiting for the owner, they were confronted by a group of people who arrived in several vehicles.
Limpopo police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba said, “A physical altercation broke out, during which one man was shot dead at the scene. The second man fled but later died after being taken to a medical facility. Police have since confirmed that one of the deceased was a 40-year-old police officer stationed in Gauteng.”
Ledwaba said all available resources have been deployed to track down those responsible.
“The police have opened two cases of murder and a manhunt for the unknown suspects involved in the incident is currently underway.”
