Five people have lost their lives following a head-on collision between a sedan and an articulated truck on the R23 between Perdekop and Standerton in Mpumalanga.
The fatal crash occurred on Monday, 13 July 2026.
According to preliminary information released by the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the collision involved an articulated truck travelling from Standerton and a sedan travelling in the opposite direction from Perdekop.
The department said emergency services declared the driver of the sedan and three passengers dead at the scene. A fifth occupant, who sustained critical injuries, was transported to Standerton Provincial Hospital for medical treatment but later died from those injuries.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. While the exact cause has not yet been established, preliminary indications suggest that dangerous overtaking may have contributed to the collision.
Meanwhile, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, describing the growing number of fatal crashes on the R23 as deeply concerning.
Macie said the road had become a “death trap” and stressed that stronger law enforcement measures were needed to address reckless driving on the route and other high-risk roads across the province.
“The number of fatal crashes on the R23 is a huge concern to the province. This stretch of road is becoming another death trap, and it means we must do more to enforce the law on the R23 and other problematic routes. Motorists must also play their part by driving safely and obeying the rules of the road,” he said.
Last month, eight people tragically lost their lives in a devastating collision between a minibus taxi and a truck on the N4 Toll Road near Waterval Onder in Mpumalanga.
The horrific accident occurred on a busy section of the highway, connecting Ngodwana and Waterval Onder.
The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport in Mpumalanga, Thulasizwe Thomo, expressed profound sadness regarding the crash.
