– 608 schools in the Free State without LTSM funding
– Schools that comply with the legislation will continue to receive their LTSM funding allocations
– Schools and SGBs should be supported to ensure legitimate use of resources
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is concerned about the number of schools that have not received Learning and Teaching Support Material (LTSM) funding from the Free State Department of Education. Withholding these funds has left many students without essential learning resources, which has a direct impact on teaching and learning.
In response to a question to the MEC for Education, Dr. Mamiki Maboya, the ministry confirmed that LTSM funds had been retained for 608 schools in the province. When hundreds of schools lack access to funding, students are disadvantaged, teachers are forced to work with limited resources, and schools are hampered in their ability to create an environment conducive to academic success.
We welcome the Department’s indication that the overall approach to withholding LTSM funding is currently under review and that schools administering these funds in accordance with the legislation will continue to receive their allocations.
The DA will closely monitor the implementation of this decision and hold the Department accountable to ensure that schools and school governing bodies (SGBs) receive the necessary support and capacity building to meet legal requirements regarding the use of funds.
