The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is urging pet and livestock owners to protect their animals as a severe weather warning remains in place across the region.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued the warning for disruptive rainfall, damaging winds, and high waves across parts of the Western Cape on Sunday.
Pet owners are being urged to ensure their animals have immediate access to clean, waterproof shelter equipped with dry bedding. The SPCA’s Belinda Abraham says that, where possible, pets should be kept entirely indoors to protect them from the harsh elements.
“Step outside today and ask yourself if you had to spend the entire day outside, would you be okay?” Abraham said. “The answer is going to be no, so please do something about it.”
The organisation reminds livestock and horse owners to also monitor water levels closely and move animals to higher, sheltered ground if localised flooding threatens their enclosures.
