The Free State police officer allegedly murdered three of his girlfriend’s relatives and then committed suicide

A Free State police officer and three members of his girlfriend’s family have been killed following a fatal shooting incident in Hennenman in the early hours of Sunday, following an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Police spokesperson Brigadier General Thandi Mbambo said a 47-year-old officer stationed in Hennenman as a rural security coordinator allegedly opened fire on a group of people after searching for his girlfriend, killing three family members and wounding two others before turning the gun on himself.

According to preliminary information released by SAPS, the officer reported for duty at 4pm on Saturday before driving to Whittes Plot near Hennenman in search of his girlfriend at around 12.30pm on Sunday.

Police said he was accompanied by the woman’s uncle after being unable to find her at an initial location. The couple then traveled to another location where family members were attending a gathering.

Upon arrival, the officer was told that his girlfriend was not present at the event. An argument reportedly broke out, during which he reportedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire on those present.

The friend’s mother, her uncle and the 25-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two additional victims suffered gunshot wounds. One was rushed to a local hospital for treatment, while another suffered an abrasion and received medical attention at the scene.

“It is further alleged that after the shooting, the member returned to the vehicle and shot himself,” Mbambo said.

The officer was found dead at the scene.

Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the shooting, which remains under investigation.

Free State Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia described the incident as “very disturbing” and extended his condolences to the affected families.

“This is a deeply disturbing and senseless incident that has left several families devastated,” Lesia said.

“On behalf of the South African Police Service in the Free State, I extend my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and wish the injured victims a speedy recovery.”

The commissioner emphasized that there could be no justification for the violence.

“While the circumstances surrounding this tragedy continue to be investigated, there can be no justification for such conduct. The SAPS in the Free State remains committed to accountability and to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and integrity among its members.”

Lesia has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the events leading up to the shooting.

IPID will investigate cases of murder, attempted murder and an inquest into the deaths.

Police said further details will be released as the investigation continues.
