The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will support police operations in parts of the Eastern Cape as law enforcement agencies ramp up security measures ahead of nationwide protests planned for 30 June 2026.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said all eight districts in the province have been placed on high alert, with additional personnel deployed and operational plans activated to deal with any potential unrest linked to the demonstrations.
The heightened state of readiness forms part of preparations by the Eastern Cape Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (ProvJOINTS), which will oversee security operations across the province.
According to police, SANDF members will be deployed in areas affected by gang-related violence, while Joint Operational Centres (JOCs) will be activated in all districts to coordinate responses and monitor developments in real time. The district centres will report directly to the Provincial Joint Operational Centre (PROV JOC).
astern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata said police were prepared to facilitate peaceful demonstrations but would act decisively against criminal conduct.
“While we acknowledge and respect the constitutional right of citizens to engage in peaceful demonstrations, we will not hesitate to act against any acts of lawlessness, violence, intimidation, or criminality,” said Ncata.
Police have also identified potential hotspots where additional resources may be required as the protest date approaches.
Ncata said manpower had been strengthened across the province to ensure public safety and maintain law and order.
“We have bolstered our manpower across the province and are calling on all protesters to conduct themselves responsibly and within the bounds of the law. No private person(s) will be allowed to assume the duties and responsibilities of the law enforcement agencies,” he said.
The commissioner urged protest organisers, community leaders and participants to cooperate with authorities to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful.
The increased security measures come amid growing anticipation around the planned nationwide protests, with police warning that any acts of violence, intimidation or vigilantism will be dealt with swiftly.
