One university student has died and two others were injured after they allegedly jumped from a moving bakkie on the R523 between Ngovhela and Sibasa, in northern Limpopo on Sunday.
According to preliminary reports, the three students had boarded the back of a utility bakkie. Along the route, they reportedly realised that the driver was behaving suspiciously and was not heading to their intended destination.
When the students repeatedly called on the driver to stop, the motorist allegedly ignored them and accelerated.
Fearing for their safety and thinking they were being abducted, the three students jumped from the moving vehicle onto the road.
One student sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The other two were injured and taken to a nearby medical facility.
The driver allegedly failed to stop after the incident and drove away.
Limpopo police have opened an investigation and a manhunt is underway to locate the driver. Police have appealed for anyone with information about a utility bakkie travelling along the R523 between Ngovhela and Sibasa on Sunday morning to contact them.
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of the family.
