Limpopo police investigate statutory rape after 16-year-old falls pregnant

A case of statutory rape is being investigated after it was discovered that a 16-year-old girl had been impregnated by a 24-year-old man in Limpopo.

The police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Makhado is investigating the matter.

“A statutory rape case of a 16-year-old female victim is being investigated after it was reported on Monday, June 8,” police said.

According to police reports, on February 26, the mother of a 16-year-old girl took her daughter to a local healthcare facility after noticing she was unwell.

After undergoing a medical examination, it was confirmed that the teenager was pregnant.

“When questioned by her mother, the victim allegedly identified her 24-year-old boyfriend as the father of the unborn child. She further disclosed that their intimate relationship began on December 27, 2025,” police said.

The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the Department of Social Development.

“Following consultations and guidance from social service officials, a case of statutory rape was opened at Tshilwavhusiku Police Station,” police said.

Police have confirmed that the suspect has not been arrested at this stage but stated police investigations are ongoing.
