Labour and Civic Organisation protests alleged preference for foreign workers in Western Cape

The Labour and Civic Organisation has drawn dozens of supporters to a protest against what it claims is the preferential employment of foreign nationals over South Africans.

The organisation said it conducted fact-finding inspections in areas including the V&A Waterfront and Belhar, where it alleges that many businesses are employing a majority of foreign nationals instead of South Africans.

Protesters arrived with their CVs to demand jobs and call for foreign nationals to leave.

They are expected to hand over a memorandum to the Western Cape government, calling for the prioritisation of South African workers over what they describe as cheap foreign labour.

The organisation’s Sapho Mahilile said: “We might believe that this thing is small, but the agenda is big. We are not only representing those who are here, we are also representing the unborn child of a South African.”
