In one of the WhatsApp chats, Mashaba appears to urge Nku, whom he has described as his informant, to “work together to look after Faith”.
The exchanges also suggest that Nku paid Mashaba to organise a rogue and unauthorised operation to recover stolen gold belonging to his associates.
Mashaba has told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that he shares a close relationship with Mazibuko.
Shortly after Mazibuko’s appointment as Community Safety MEC in 2019, Mashaba sent the WhatsApp message to Nku.
The exchange, however, does not explain what they meant by “looking after” the MEC.
When evidence leader Lee Seegers-Ncube asked him to clarify the message, Mashaba said he could not remember the context of the conversation.
Seegels-Ncube asked, “Why would you need to look after the MEC with Mr Nku?”
“Not that I don’t want to answer, but I honestly don’t know what my answer could be,” Mashaba replied.
Mashaba claimed he could not remember the context of every single one of his WhatsApp conversations with the so-called Mr Nku, a response that appeared to frustrate the commissioners.
