Briefing the media on Thursday at the Eldorado Park police station, Mthombeni said authorities would be watching events on the ground and from the air.
The commissioner said police would use a combination of helicopters, drones and an extensive CCTV network to track any criminal activity and identify those responsible.
He warned that while some arrests might be effected on the day, others could follow after suspects were identified through video footage and other evidence.
Mthombeni warned lawbreakers that they would not escape accountability. “At the latest stage, we come and knock at your door, saying you are under arrest. There are people who think they can get away. Don’t get into that play.”
The comments came as Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia repeatedly warned that criminality, intimidation, incitement to violence and the destruction of property would not be tolerated.
The government has already set aside more than R600 million for a national security operation ahead of 30 June.
Gauteng is considered one of several key provinces being closely monitored as authorities prepare for any eventuality.
