Gauteng massacre | 12 killed in Cleveland shooting

Police have launched a manhunt for suspects following a mass shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland that claimed the lives of 12 people and left several others injured on Tuesday night.

According to police, officers responded to reports of a shooting in progress at about 11.10pm on 9 June 2026. Upon arrival, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene to assist the injured.

Preliminary investigations indicate that 12 people died in the attack. Eight adult men and three adult women were declared dead at the scene, while another male victim later died in hospital.

At least nine other victims were transported to various medical facilities for treatment.

Police said it is alleged that more than 10 suspects were dropped off near a petrol station in Cleveland by a white Toyota Quantum. The group allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.

Provincial and district detectives, supported by crime intelligence and forensic experts, have been deployed to investigate the shooting and trace those responsible.

The motive for the attack remains unknown and is the subject of an ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or submit information anonymously through the MySAPS mobile application.
