Eastern Cape police ramp up security preparations ahead of planned protests on June 30

Eastern Cape police have stepped up security preparations ahead of planned nationwide protests against illegal migration on June 30.

The demonstrations follow a deadline set by activist groups for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa by the end of the month.

Police said that contingency plans have been activated across all eight districts in the province.

Eastern Cape Police Commissioner Vuyisile Ncata said that additional officers have been deployed to identified hotspots.

He added that the South African National Defence Force will support police operations in areas affected by gang-related violence.

Ncata said that police respect the constitutional right to protest peacefully.

However, he warns that any violence, intimidation, or criminal activity will be met with swift action.

He urged organisers and community leaders to work with law enforcement to ensure the demonstrations remain peaceful and orderly.

Ncata also stressed that no private individuals will be allowed to carry out law enforcement duties.
